The Man Who Thought Little Of Himself

Synopsis: This book tells the story of a watchman who failed to keep watch over his city because he began to think that his work was of no importance to the city. As a consequence, he did not notice as invaders began to spy the city and eventually invade it while the city dwellers, including his friends and family, slept.

The Man Who Thought Little of Himself is set in historical North Africa. Its illustrations depict elements of ancient Egyptian civilization. The intent is to impress upon the mind of the African child the existence of neighbouring African civilizations quite different from elements in their immediate environment.

Morals: This book teaches the importance of self-esteem, diligence and dignity in labour. It is intended to teach these values to the child reader, while at the same time entertaining them with the story made more engaging with beautiful illustrations.

When Everyone Sings

Synopsis: This book tells the story of a village boy who loved to play the flute and sing so much. Many people considered him lazy because he played the flute all day and could hardly work on the farm like other children his age. One day, his skill on the flute won him fame and prominence, and then everyone wished to become like him. It made them abandon their farms as they worked hard day and night to master the flute. Harvest time came, there were no crops in the farms and everyone suffered.

When Everyone Sings is set in historical West Africa. The choice of details is intended to convey to the reader’s mind the elements of a traditional West African setting typical of the Igbo-speaking people of the rainforest regions.

Morals: This book emphasizes on the importance of staying true to self and appreciating our uniqueness.
